"Dustin is on the path of a terrific musical career. His musical voice is waiting to be heard by those hungry for the next real thing."

Every year or two, if you're lucky, you come across a recording that is so remarkable and startling that it seems to change the air in the room -- the type of album that the moment it's over, you need to play it again. For me, an album like that must feel new and fresh but have the weight of history in the sound.   The songs must have room for you, yet somehow keep a part of themselves a mystery.  I like big records, but I tend to love small records -- the type that by choice or necessity are stripped down to include only what is essential.  I hear single songs that manage to reach these depths, but so few albums can maintain that power and intimacy for the entire record. Folk Songs, by Dustin Lowman, does all of this.

"Folk Songs is a homespun freak-folk album that calls on Wilsonian psychedeliabeat sensibilities, and strains of the southwest in a strange menagerie of sounds, harmonies, and overdubs aplenty. It flits between neurosis and revelation, blurring the line between the two. The sparkling production and baroque layers that clothe these otherwise simple songs feel less like adornment and more like conflict. It's preciouspersonal, and impressive in scope for a mere 39 minutes; moreover, it represents a big step forward for a good friend and longtime collaborator. Well done.
